Pelican Bay State Prison is in Crescent City – 2010 population 7,643 – a fishing town surrounded by forest on the Pacific coast just 20 miles from the Oregon border. The climate is cold and wet, yet prisoners have fought for decades for clothing to keep them warm in their uninsulated cells. On Oct. 1, 2011, in the midst of the second hunger strike, supporters rallied at the prison gate to encourage the strikers.
