The lawsuit was filed in September in U.S. District Court in Jackson against Howard Ballou, an anchor for Jackson-based WLBT-TV. The suit said Ballous mother worked for King as a secretary from 1955 to 1960 and kept documents during the time King led the Montgomery Improvement Association and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.”Im very pleased that the judge saw how incredibly frivolous and ridiculous this lawsuit was. My mother and father and Dr. and Mrs. King were very, very close friends and I resent how the estate tried to, for lack of a better term, besmirch my mothers character,” Ballou said Friday. “She risked her life like so many others so we could have the rights we have today. It saddens me that one of Americas greatest heroes, my personnel hero, Dr. Martin Luther King, is being tarnished by this type of behavior.”In dismissing the lawsuit, U.S. District Judge Tom Lee said there was nothing to contradict Maude Ballous testimony that King gave her the material. Lee dismissed the lawsuit with prejudice, meaning it cant be refiled. The King estate could appeal the ruling.
