Pouslbo Elementary School Principal Claudia Alves was explaining the difference between the ‘N’ word and the word Negro after one of her students expressed reluctance at using the word Negro during rehearsal for a Martin Luther King Jr. play. Alves was explaining to the students that the ‘N’ word and the word Negro are not the same thing, and spoke the ‘N’ word during her explanation.
Superintendent Patty Page said Principal Alves went on a nondisciplinary leave of absence, according to The Seattle Times.
Mother Shawna Smith says she complained to the school because her son heard the ‘N’ word from the principal. Her son had refused to participate in the play because it used the word Negro, that’s when Alves attempted to explain to him that the “N” word and the word Negro aren’t the same thing.
