Ebola and Dehumanisation

A few months ago Newsweek Magazine carried the story ‘A Back Door for Ebola: Smuggled Bushmeat Could Spark a US Epidemic’ with a chimpanzee on the cover. The article pointed the consumption of ‘bush meat’ as the cause for the outbreak in West Africa and suggested that immigrants smuggling meat into the US could lead to infection if the US population. In a laughably insulting move, the cover also featured an article on post racial America.
Though this may seem like just a simple cover to some, I question the intent behind using a picture of a Chimpanzee (Chimpanzees are not commonly eaten in the areas affected by the virus) and not a cover reflecting in the plight of those bearing the brunt of the virus? It also suggests that the outbreak is simply due to the wayward West/Central African locals eating ‘bushmeat’.
